Egg production and individual genetic diversity in lesser kestrels   总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1  
Fecundity is an important component of individual fitness and has major consequences on population dynamics. Despite this, the influence of individual genetic variability on egg production traits is poorly known. Here, we use two microsatellite-based measures, homozygosity by loci and internal relatedness, to analyse the influence of female genotypic variation at 11 highly variable microsatellite loci on both clutch size and egg volume in a wild population of lesser kestrels (Falco naumanni). Genetic diversity was associated with clutch size, with more heterozygous females laying larger clutches, and this effect was statistically independent of other nongenetic variables such as female age and laying date, which were also associated with fecundity in this species. However, egg volume was not affected by female heterozygosity, confirming previous studies from pedigree-based breeding experiments which suggest that this trait is scarcely subjected to inbreeding depression. Finally, we explored whether the association between heterozygosity and clutch size was due to a genome-wide effect (general effect) or to single locus heterozygosity (local effect). Two loci showed a stronger influence but the correlation was not fully explained by these two loci alone, suggesting that a main general effect underlies the association observed. Overall, our results underscore the importance of individual genetic variation for egg production in wild bird populations, a fact that could have important implications for conservation research and provides insights into the study of clutch size evolution and genetic variability maintenance in natural populations.  相似文献

1. Sexually selected traits are expected to vary seasonally, with the maximal expression of the character being evident during mate choice; however, the mechanisms controlling or regulating such traits are generally poorly known.
2. Carotenoid pigments responsible for bright red or yellow coloration in the feathers, skin or other integumentary structures of birds are generally believed to vary seasonally because of diet.
3. Variation in carotenoid-dependent skin colour between winter and spring (mating season) was investigated, as was variation in plasma carotenoids across the breeding season in captive American Kestrels, Falco sparverius , fed a uniform diet.
4. Kestrels were more brightly coloured in the mating period than in winter, and plasma carotenoid concentrations declined from the time of mating to the rearing of young.
5. Although carotenoid levels were highly sexually dimorphic during mating and laying, males and both breeding and non-breeding females all had similar levels by the incubation period, and the pattern of variation over time suggests rheostatic regulation.
6. These results suggest kestrels may have the ability to regulate (rather than merely control) their colour physiologically, the variation in colour and carotenoids is consistent with that expected of a sexually selected trait, and the loss of colour after breeding may suggest a trade-off between the show and health functions of carotenoids.  相似文献

Many falcons (Falco spp.) exhibit a distinct dark plumage patch below the eye, termed the malar stripe. This stripe is hypothesized to reduce the amount of solar glare reflected into the eyes while foraging, thereby increasing hunting efficiency in bright conditions. Here, we use a novel, global-scale correlative approach to test this ‘solar glare hypothesis'' in peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus), the most widespread falcon species, using web-sourced photographs from across the species'' global range. We found that the size and prominence of the malar stripe were positively associated with average annual solar radiation, but not with other environmental variables, such as temperature and rainfall. Our results provide the first published evidence for the hypothesis that this plumage feature functions to reduce the amount of solar glare reflected into the falcon''s eyes, thereby improving the ability to pinpoint and target agile prey in bright conditions.  相似文献

In the context of sexual selection and parent-offspring communication, carotenoid-based coloration operates as a dynamic condition-dependent signal, as pigments stored in the skin and in the bill can be reallocated to other tissues in accordance with physiological needs. We studied the proximate factors affecting the carotenoid-dependent coloration of the Eurasian kestrel (Falco tinnunculus). Kestrel nestlings show carotenoid-based coloration at the integument level. Adult males and females share similar characteristics, but to a different extent. By cross-fostering nestlings, we evaluated the importance of the “nest of rearing” and the “nest of origin” to determine variation in skin color and blood carotenoids. The nest of rearing accounted for most of the observed variance in skin color, as well as serum carotenoids, while the nest of origin was not causal to the variability of carotenoids in young kestrels. The study indirectly shows that carotenoid-based color expressed by young kestrels is not affected by pre-laying conditions. Furthermore, we found that carotenoid coloration and blood carotenoid concentration were correlated at phenotypic and environmental levels, while the hereditary component of the carotenoid traits was too low to estimate their correlation at the genetic level.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Although radiotelemetry is considered a valuable technique for ornithological field studies, several assumptions have been made about the impact that transmitters may have on the estimation of behavioral, ecological, and reproductive parameters. To assess the potential effects of backpack radiotransmitters, we captured and assigned 8 male American kestrels (Falco sparverius) into 2 groups: radiotagged (n = 6) and control individuals (leg-banded, n = 2). Thereafter, we collected feces approximately 2 hours after capture (day −1), and subsequently during days 0 (releasing day), 4, 7, 15, 30, 40, and 55. Prior to fecal analysis, we validated the corticosterone enzyme immunoassay using standard procedures (e.g., parallelism, dose-response curve), and we confirmed physiological significance of fecal glucocorticoid metabolites through adrenocorticotropin challenge, which induced an increase of 4-fold (446.10 ± 60.73 ng/g) above baseline (114.27 ± 15.23 ng/g) within 4 hours (P < 0.001). Both groups exhibited a significant increase in fecal glucocorticoids during day 0 (P < 0.001), but concentrations returned to preattachment values within 4 days. Fecal glucocorticoid concentrations did not differ between samples of radiotagged and leg-banded kestrels (P > 0.05). In spite of the small number of monitored subjects, these findings suggested that radiotransmitters did not affect adrenocortical activity in these male American kestrels.  相似文献

We studied the consequences of chronic infections by three different lineages of avian malaria, two Plasmodium (RTSR1, LK6) and one Haemoproteus (LK2), on reproductive performance of Lesser Kestrels (Falco naumanni). Malaria infections in male and female parents had no effect on clutch size, hatching success or nesting success. However, when only successful nests were considered, we found that males parasitized by LK6 raised a lower number of fledglings, suggesting that the level of parental effort by males may be limited by this particular lineage of Plasmodium. This effect was not evident in females, probably due to the higher investment of males during the chick rearing period in this species. Overall, we have found that chronic stages of specific malaria lineages have certain negative consequences on host reproductive performance, highlighting the importance of considering genetic differences among malaria parasites to study their consequences on natural bird populations.  相似文献

Predator and prey attack-escape performance is likely to bethe outcome of an evolutionary arms race. Predatory birds aretypically larger than their prey, suggesting different flightperformances. We analyze three idealized attack-escape situationsbetween predatory and prey birds: climbing flight escape, horizontalspeeding, and turning and escape by diving. Generally a smallerbird will outclimb a larger predator and hence outclimbing shouldbe a common escape strategy. However, some predators such asthe Eleonora's falcon (Falco elenorae) has a very high rateof climb for its size. Prey species with an equal or highercapacity to climb fast, such as the swift Apus apus, usuallyadopt climbing escape when attacked by Eleonora's falcons.To analyze the outcome of the turning gambit between predatorand prey we use a Howland diagram, where the relative lineartop speeds and minimum turning radii of prey and predator definethe escape and danger zones. Applied to the Eleonora's falconand some potential prey species, this analysis indicates thatthe falcon usually wins against the example prey species; thatis, the prey will be captured. Level maneuvering hunting isthe most common strategy seen in Eleonora's falcons. To avoidcapture via use of this strategy by a predator, the prey shouldbe able to initiate tight turns at high linear speed, whichis facilitated by a low wing loading (weight per unit of wingarea). High diving speed is favored by large size. If close enough to safe cover, a prey might still opt for a verticaldive to escape in spite of lower terminal diving speed thanthat of the predator. On the basis of aerodynamic considerationswe discuss escape flight strategies in birds in relation tomorphological adaptations.  相似文献
